About the Saengerbund

HSB sign

Founded in 1858, the Saengerbund has long been a significant contributor among German-American organizations in maintaining and promoting its cultural heritage. Having endured the consequences of the Civil War, two World Wars and the Depression years, the organization, originally based in Hartford, has made its home in Newington since 1966.

At the heart of its activities are the Choral groups, which meet each Friday evening from September through June. The Men's, Ladies' and Mixed Choruses have won many awards in the Annual competition among similar groups throughout Connecticut and New England area.

A brief history of the organization would not be complete without reference to such major events as the Bierfest and Christkindlmarkt (Christmas Bazaar). Since 1984, Bierfests featuring bands from Germany have been a significant club activity.
