About Maifest

Maifest, the German May Day festival, marks the unofficial start of the warm season. For centuries, German communities have welcomed May with the raising of a Maibaum (maypole), decorated with ribbons, greenery, and emblems of the local trades and clubs.

At the Saengerbund, Maifest is a chance for the whole community to shake off winter together. Expect cold beer in the biergarten, German food from the kitchen, live music, and the unmistakable feeling that good things are ahead.

Check the Events Calendar for this year's date, or join our mailing list to be notified when the date is announced.

The Tradition

The Maibaum

The centerpiece of any Maifest is the Maibaum, a tall, decorated pole that the whole community gathers to raise together. In Bavaria and Austria, the tradition dates back to the Middle Ages. The pole is adorned with the symbols of local crafts, sports clubs, and cultural organizations, a living directory of community life.

At the HSB, it's an occasion for music, food, and the simple pleasure of being outside together again after a long Connecticut winter.
